I had initially planned this beachside vacation as a means of pure rest and relaxation after a hectic year of work and study. I somehow missed the memo that December in the United States is the craziest time to travel. I had enjoyed a 9 hour direct flight from Sydney, Australia and touched down at about the same time as most of mainland America. Yep, Hawaii in December, specifically the period before Christmas and after New Year is the busiest time of the year to visit. Add to this, mainland America was experiencing the toughest of winters with multiple major airports experiencing blizzards and extreme weather conditions.
We all set upon this beautiful island with the same intention, rest and relaxation. My flight landed on sunrise, crossing the international date line meant I had gained time. Cabin crew were finishing their rounds as our flight descended through the clouds. I held my breathe for as I glanced out the window, the shades of blue and the dramatic profile of Diamond head appeared.
